Melissa Brown is a Leicestershire-based trombonist, brass teacher, and arts administrator. A graduate of Trinity Laban (2013) with a degree in performance and an LTCL in Instrumental Teaching, Melissa is active as a performer and educator throughout the UK. She currently holds the solo trombone position with Enderby Band and is a section member of the international Athena Brass Band.

 

An active performer in brass bands, brass ensembles, orchestras, and pit bands, Melissa has worked across the UK and abroad. Highlights from her career include a being part of a live-music tour of Southern India promoting the film Neethaane En Ponvasantham, and performing as both a trombonist and narrator with the all-female Athena Brass Band in Texas in 2022. With a background in music education, Melissa has run her own private teaching practice since the age of 19, passionate about continuing to build the next generation of brass players. She has also been a professional mentor for the International Women’s Brass Conference (IWBC) mentorship scheme since its founding three years ago.

Through this scheme, Melissa has shared presentations on musician's mental health (2023) and building an interesting and sustainable career (2024) with the IWBC community. As a passion project in 2020, Melissa also launched the Bold as Brass Podcast, as a free educational weekly resource, interviewing professionals from across the brass industry about their careers.

 

As of Spring 2025, Melissa is a training brass band adjudicator having been accepted onto the Development Scheme with the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators.

 

Born and raised into a British-Cypriot brass-playing household in Cambridgeshire, Melissa joined her father and brother early on in her love of brass starting her journey alongside them at Chatteris Town Band. She now lives with her fiancé and two dogs and works as Concerts Producer with Birmingham-based, Ex Cathedra.
